At STEWART Industries we have been proud supporters of the United Way of Battle Creek/Kalamazoo since the inception of our company. Critical to the sustainability of any organization is a strong surrounding community where people are thriving and reaching their full potential. Over the past 19 years we have seen families lives changed; children achieve their dreams of college, and much more by simply getting involved. As we move forward we are excited to be part of the fight against hunger, improving the reading scores of our children, along with fulfilling employment needs. Food bank south central michigan

A strong future is built on the foundation where basic needs are met in the community where we exist. We take great pride in being involved in the Cereal City story by supporting our local food bank. Nutrition has been the bedrock of our founder’s career, and we continue that passion by working with our associates to eliminate hunger. Children at risk of hunger are more likely to be in poor health and struggle in schools. When we build strong and healthy communities the future of our local community & nation becomes brighter. The South Central Michigan chapter of Feeding America has been an integral partner in helping us sustain our giving initiatives. BINDER PARK ZOO

In the fall of 2014, Joseph M. Stewart and his wife, Clara, donated $275,000 to construct the Joe and Clara Stewart African Tented Camp and Zamani School.

The tented camp is situated along the 18-acre savanna in the Wild Africa portion of the Zoo, completed with bunk beds and a nearby shower facility. The addition of a cement block school building, reminiscent of the kind found in Africa, acts as an educational facility where programs are held, as well as providing a commons area for campers. The facility features artifacts from around Africa, helping to give the space an authentic African feel, while immersing participants in the African culture.

These programs allow the zoo to offer a unique opportunity for children to be connected with nature in hopes that they may someday become the next generation of wildlife ambassadors.

The new space creates a unique opportunity for children to stay overnight and learn about Africa, its history, and its culture. The Stewart’s hope with this exhibit is to teach the community about African culture and cultivate “Ubuntu”, which is the South African philosophy of “humanity towards others.”
